South Chicago Chamber of Commerce
Fall
Calendar of Events 2011

Summer is in full swing as we begin the process of looking at the fall line up of activities and events for the community.

By popular demand, local merchants actively lobbied the Chamber to add some additional weekend sidewalk sales to the traditional two. After a survey, it was decided to do so on Friday and Saturdays. About a dozen stores participate. Any additional foot traffic on Commercial is most appreciated by the struggling merchants.

The Annual Back To School Fest is set for Saturday, August 6th on the 91st block of Exchange in front of the Chicago Family Health Center. The sidewalk sale and resource fair will also be held simultaneously. Another fest will be co-sponsored by the Chamber in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Public Health at their East 89th Exchange facility. It will be held on August 26th from 9:00am to 2:00pm Both fairs will feature school supplies distribution as well as school physicals, immunizations, refreshments and entertainment to an anticipated 1,000-1,200 local youth.

The Chamber will also sponsor its fifth annual Principals Resource Luncheon on August 29th. An expected 17-19 principals are expected to hear presentations from various community agencies and organizations on their respective services and programs available to the schools. An overview of the Safe Passage Program at Bowen will also be provided. It was just approved by the CEO of the public Schools.

In the meantime, the Chamber is working with the Mexican Patriotic Club to plan for the annual Mexican Independence Day Parade being held on September 11th along Commercial Ave. It will mark the 75th year and promises to be even larger that the last several.

The annual Oktoberfest will take place on Commercial on Saturday, October 22nd. It will feature a hay ride through the community and distribution of free mini pumpkins and apple cider with freshly popped popcorn.

The Quarters for a Cause Campaign will occur on the 29th of October. The coins collected by the schools and participating agencies will be donated to selected food pantries and feeding programs. This campaign also includes the hugely successful food drive with Los Niños School taking the lead on that, surpassing their collection every year!

Lastly, a fall Networking Luncheon will take place for local agencies and social service providers in appreciation of their partnerships with the Chamber throughout the year.

As you can see, plenty of things going on her in our little corner of the world!

ANNUAL MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE

SET FOR SEPTEMBER 11

This Annual Mexican Independence Day marks the 72nd such event sponsored by the Mexican Patriotic Club of South Chicago. The South Chicago Chamber is a co-sponsor. Each year with the exception of the 911 bombing, and Hurricane IKE in 2008 this parade has attracted thousands of participants and observers lined up from 87th to 100th Commercial. From young and old, all walks of life come out to enjoy and appreciate the rich and proud history of the Mexican people and their contributions to the Southeast side of Chicago. Although it is often believed that Pilsen is the oldest Mexican settlement in Chicago, it was actually South Chicago. The influx beginning in the mid 1940’s with the steel industry expansion and related economic opportunities made available. It is not surprising to find Mexican families still living here that extend back 4 or 5 generations easily. This parade has become such a time consuming effort that the Chamber is helping provide office space for the parade and a part time staff person to get a running start on organizing. The extension of added resources is a win, win situation, according to Sarah Rodriguez, the part-time manager.

MAYOR VISITS SOUTH CHICAGO ON APPRECIATION TOUR

On Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Mayor Daley made a stop in South Chicago at the site of the former Wisconsin Steel. There he was greeted by Alderman Pope, and a host of community leaders. Neil Bosanko, Executive Director of the South Chicago Chamber thanked him for the vision in aiding in the implementation of the streetcar now in it’s 3rd year running; “Steel Milly” was on hand, to offer proof of what forward minded thinking the Mayor had for this great city. The site of the event is one of several new manufacturing developments planned for this region, bringing new jobs to the area. Asphalt Operating Services is building a plant at which liquid asphalt will be stored and then shipped to construction sites as needed. Daley said Wednesday that such construction is what will create jobs and help revitalize the Southeast Side neighborhoods, and it is why he chose to visit the construction site as part of his Neighborhood Appreciation Tour of all 50 wards in the month before he leaves office. Daley said the fact that people quit thinking in terms of finding a new steel mill to replace Wisconsin Steel and the other steel mills that used to exist in the area is what will help their neighborhoods thrive.

"You have to change with the times, or else you get stuck living in the past," Daley said, during his hourlong visit to the construction site. "The future is always brighter than the past." Asphalt Operating Services officials say construction of their new plant is about 70 percent complete, and that it was possible because of $45 million in Recovery Zone Facility Bonds issued by the city - along with property tax breaks granted by the Cook County Board. Owner Al Meitl said he thinks it's appropriate his company helped to clean up much of the industrial waste that was left by the old steel mill. "In essence, we recycled industrial land," he said. "That is an important statement." Daley said he sees such new plants as important because they come at a time when people are desperate for gainful employment Several local residents were given the chance to express their thoughts about Daley including Chamber Executive Director Neil Bosanko and Chamber President Angela Hurlock!
